Formula Sheet Isn't Enough.

Here's Why.

Physics is not a subject where remembering more formulas automatically means solving more questions. A formula is only useful when you know what it means, when it applies, and why it works.

NEWTON'S SECOND LAW
F = ma
F Force
m Mass

But when should you actually use it?

THE REAL PROBLEM

Knowing a formula is not the same as understanding Physics.

Many students prepare Physics by collecting formulas chapter after chapter. Before an exam, they revise everything from one large formula sheet and feel prepared.

But when the actual question appears, they often get stuck because the question does not directly say which formula should be used.

The real skill in Physics is not simply remembering F = ma. It is recognising a situation, identifying the physical quantities involved and then choosing the right relationship.

BEFORE USING ANY FORMULA

Ask These 3 Questions.

Train yourself to think before calculating.

01

What is happening?

First understand the physical situation. Is an object accelerating? Is energy being transferred? Is current flowing? Is a force acting?

Understand the situation
02

What quantities are involved?

Identify what is given and what needs to be found. Then connect those quantities with the physical principle behind the problem.

Connect the quantities
03

Which formula fits?

Only after understanding the situation should you choose the equation. This prevents random formula substitution.

Choose intelligently
THE OLD APPROACH

Formula → Substitute → Calculate

01 Memorise equation
02 Search for values
03 Substitute
Works only when the question is straightforward.
THE BETTER APPROACH

Situation → Principle → Formula → Answer

01 Understand
02 Identify principle
03 Apply equation
Works better for conceptual and numerical questions.
LET'S TAKE AN EXAMPLE

Don't Just Remember F = ma

SITUATION

A 5 kg object is initially at rest. A net force acts on it and produces an acceleration of 4 m/s².

Mass 5 kg
Acceleration 4 m/s²
Find Force
01
IDENTIFY THE PRINCIPLE

Net force produces acceleration.

02
SELECT THE RELATION

F = ma

03
APPLY THE VALUES

F = 5 × 4 = 20 N

HOW TO STUDY ANY PHYSICS CHAPTER

Build the concept first.
Memorise less.

01

Understand the story

Start with the physical phenomenon. Ask yourself what is actually happening instead of immediately opening the formula sheet.

02

Connect the concepts

Learn how different quantities are related. For example, connect force with acceleration, work with energy, and current with potential difference.

03

Then learn the formula

Once you understand the relationship, the formula becomes much easier to remember because it has meaning behind it.

04

Finally solve problems

Start with basic questions and gradually move towards application-based and multi-concept problems.

QUICK TAKEAWAYS

Make your Physics actually stick.

Understand first

Don't start every chapter by memorising equations.

Write from memory

After understanding a concept, try explaining it without looking at your notes.

Mix question types

Practice direct, conceptual and application-based questions.

Revise actively

Revisit concepts periodically instead of doing one huge revision before the exam.

THE BIG IDEA

A formula is a tool.
Understanding tells you when to use it.

So the next time you open your Physics formula sheet, don't just ask yourself, "Can I remember this?" Ask something more useful: "Do I understand what this formula is telling me?"
