PHYSICS

How to Study Physics for Class 11 & 12

Physics is not difficult because there are too many formulas. It becomes difficult when we try to solve every question without understanding what the question is actually asking. A better approach is to build the habit of thinking like a problem solver.

THE REAL PROBLEM

Physics is not a memory test.

Many students begin Physics by collecting formulas, highlighting important questions and trying to remember every possible shortcut.

But when the question changes slightly in the exam, the same formula suddenly feels useless.

The reason is simple: knowing a formula and knowing when to use it are two different things.

01

Stop asking “Which formula?”

Start by asking what is happening in the situation. Is an object accelerating? Is energy being transferred? Is a force changing the motion? Is something conserved?

Once you identify the physical situation, the mathematics usually becomes much easier to handle. This small change in thinking can completely change the way you approach numerical problems.

“Don't start with the equation. Start with the situation.”

02

Build chapters as connected ideas

One of the biggest mistakes students make is treating every chapter as an isolated topic.

Instead, try to see how one idea naturally leads to another. Motion gives you a way to describe change. Forces explain why that motion changes. Energy gives you another way to understand the same physical system.

When chapters start becoming connected in your mind, revision becomes much easier because you are no longer remembering dozens of unrelated facts.

THINK IN CONNECTIONS
Motion What is changing?
Force Why is it changing?
Energy How can we describe it differently?
03

Your notebook should show your thinking

A good Physics notebook is not simply a collection of copied classroom notes.

Leave space beside important concepts and write small observations such as:

  • What does this quantity actually represent?
  • What assumptions are being made?
  • When will this equation not work?
  • Can the same idea be explained another way?

These small notes become extremely valuable during revision because they capture your reasoning instead of just reproducing textbook definitions.

04

Don't judge your preparation by the number of questions

Solving fifty questions without understanding your mistakes is often less useful than solving fewer questions carefully.

After getting a question wrong, don't immediately look at the solution and move ahead.

Instead, identify the exact point where your approach went wrong. Was the concept unclear? Did you interpret the situation incorrectly? Was there a calculation mistake? Or did you simply rush?

Concept Did I understand the idea?
Approach Did I choose the right method?
Execution Did I make a calculation error?
05

Revision should become progressively shorter

Your first study session with a chapter should take the most time. You are learning the ideas for the first time.

The next revision should be faster because the structure is already familiar. Later, you should ideally be able to recall the major ideas from a single page of notes.

The goal of revision is therefore not to repeatedly reread everything. The goal is to make the information easier to retrieve each time.

THE TAKEAWAY

Learn the idea. Question the situation. Then use the mathematics.

A strong Physics preparation is not about knowing the maximum number of formulas. It is about being comfortable with unfamiliar situations and knowing how to break them down.
